WATER THEFT
Georgetown Municipal Water and Sewer Service (GMWSS) is committed to
providing high quality
water and sewer services at the lowest possible cost to its customers. Water
theft can
compromise this commitment. Theft of water by tampering or bypassing water
meters not only
costs GMWSS thousands of dollars a year, but also imposes costs on each and
every paying
customer who must bear the responsibility of paying higher rates for water
that is stolen. Water
theft is a serious offense and can result in significant fines as well as
criminal or civil prosecution
by GMWSS.
Any person or persons found to be taking water illegally will be charged for
the time and labor
that GMWSS employees spend investigating the theft. Additional charges can
include mileage,
billing of 10,000 gallons of water (minimum) usage (or more based upon the
findings of the
investigation), a $30 service charge, administrative costs, and any charge
for damaged materials
(Ex: meter, meter box, lid, locks, meter tub, fire hydrant, etc.). Water
service will be discontinued
immediately after the theft has been discovered, and a service charge of
$30.00 will be charged
to have service restored.
Customer assistance in locating illegal connections is always appreciated
and encouraged. Water
theft has a negative effect on GMWSS customers. If you are aware of water
theft taking place in
a property, or are suspicious that water theft may be occurring, please
contact GMWSS at 502-
863-7816 during regular business hours.
